Presentation
The theatre activities promoted by the Department are differentiated according to their type: they may be either a workshop or the production of theatre plays:

Workshops:

  • they are carried out jointly with the Operation Unit for Rehabilitation and the Operation Unit of the Mental Healthcare Centre
  • rehabilitation through acquisition of theatre skills
  • fighting social exclusion: the patients in the theatre company had to change their habits in order to take part in the project. In other words, patients had to re-think their limitations in terms of autonomy (their capacity of movement, their schedule, their way to face new situations) if they wanted to take part in a type of activity which takes place outside the realm of their disease and/or treatment (institutional contexts).

Involved patients had to break a closed circuit banning the opportunity to establish relations and implying social exclusion; they also had to develop a different mindset, allowing them to open to meeting other people.
-development of self-expression and communication skills, listening and integration skills

Production:

  • Production is carried out jointly with the Operation Unit for Rehabilitation and the Operation Unit of the Mental Healthcare Centre
  • the fight to stigma: promotion of an artistic dimension
  • promotion of cultural debate on mental diseases
  • rehabilitation through acquisition of theatre skills, setting on stage and touring.

Theatre activities are managed by the Social Promotion Association "Diurni & Notturni". The association "Diurni & Notturni" was created in October 2006, in order to promote the fight to stigma through art initiatives at the local level. Indeed, founders maintain that art can support and treat people and bring about the expression of one's inner world. Besides, arts give people an opportunity to get together, overcoming social and role-related differences. Isolation often brought about by sigma and mental diseases is one of the main inputs for reflection and action dealt with by the association.

Theatre activities are carried out through a convention between the Ausl, the Social Promotion Association "Diurni e notturni", the Social Promotion Association "Fuori Serie", the Reciprocal Self Support Group "Apertamente", the "Teatro gioco vita s.r.l." and the DSM, in the framework of the Regional Programme "Theatre and Mental Healthcare" ("Teatro e Salute mentale"). Moreover, an agreement between the Music Conservatory "Giuseppe Nicolini" in Piacenza and the Piacenza DSM is in place; it concerns the provision of music during the workshop and during public exhibition.
